Greetings from the Amgen Tour of California!

Yesterday was the Prologue to launch the Amgen Tour of California – an 8 day professional cycling race that winds down California from Sacramento to San Diego and features 17 pro cycling teams. The Wellness Community is a partner in the Breakaway From Cancer campaign, which is a complementary component of the Tour and is designed to raise awareness of all of the great resources and services that exist for people affected

by cancer. Other partners include the Prevent Cancer Foundation, the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship and the Patient Advocate Foundation.

Yesterday, Valentine’s Day, was a very exciting start to the race in Sacramento with Fabian Cancellara of Team Saxo Bank claiming victory in the Prologue. World cycling champion and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong won the Amgen Breakaway From Cancer Most Courageous Rider Jersey.

Today the race started in Davis with pouring rain and strong winds and took a grueling 107 mile route to an exciting finish in Santa Rosa. Spanish rider Francisco Mancebo of the Rock Racing team won the day after grabbing a significant lead early in the race.

The Wellness Community is featured everyday in the Lifestyle Festival where we have a great opportunity to get the word out about our wonderful programs and services for all people touched by cancer. Thanks to our colleague Judy Blazin from SF-East Bay Wellness Community for being out with us yesterday and today and thanks to Jasan Zimmerman from our Wellness Community in development in Silicon Valley who also braved the elements to support us today in Santa Rosa. Also thanks to our dear friends and cycling fans Andy and Dottie Leven for coming out today to cheer everyone on. Tomorrow we will follow the race from Sausalito to Santa Cruz, spreading the word about The Wellness Community! Thanks Amgen for this great opportunity and for your generous support. And, finally, thank you to our dear friend Andy Tao for providing fantastic photos for our blog this week!
