Raising awareness at the Dempsey Challenge

Patrick Dempsey, also known as "McDreamy," crosses the finish line at the Dempsey Challenge!

CSC spent the weekend in Maine for the Dempsey Challenge, a race and cycling event to benefit the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing.

The weekend was a huge success for the center, with over 4,294 participants in both events and raising over $1.1 million dollars.

Saturday, runners took to the streets (and hills!) of Lewiston to run in either a 5 or 10K race. CSC and our fellow Breakaway from Cancer partners (Prevent Cancer Foundation, Patient Advocate Foundation and National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship) hosted a booth at the finish line and throughout the festival that welcomed the finished runners, supporters and local individuals and their families. We were honored to meet so many cancer patients, survivors and their families and share the many free resources our partnership and individual organizations have to offer. It was also great to see many returning faces to the event and hear about their cancer journey.

Sunday’s weather was not too kind to the biking participants. With rain and temperatures in the mid-40s, it made for tough elements for the riders to say the least! Riders rode routes in 10, 25, 50, 70 or 100 mile routes and hosted participants from around the world, including Switzerland, South America and Africa. CSC supporter Cathy Smith rode 25 miles in the Challenge raised almost $500 for the center!

The day wasn’t without some sunshine though, when loyal Breakaway from Cancer followers Lee and Bonnie Hansen came to support the challenge and spent time with us at the BFC tent. We can’t wait to see them next year out west for the Amgen Tour of California!

The weekend was a great success which raised incredible funds and awareness about the Dempsey Center, founded by Patrick Dempsey, after his mother’s own cancer diagnosis. The center focuses on improving the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities impacted by cancer through support, education, integrative medicine, outreach and prevention—all free of charge.
